My Favorite Way to Make Editing Easier? Vital Edit

I have had tons of conversations with photographers recently who are overwhelmed, overworked, and bogged down trying to keep up with work as the world opens back up. Their schedules are unsustainable, they’re feeling less present with their spouses and kids, and they’re exhausted.

Oh, I get it. I really, really do.

Being a wedding photographer (or any kind of photographer, really) is the best ever, but it can also be mega overwhelming and time consuming. Between client outreach, shoot planning, weddings, and all of the mental energy that owning a business takes up on its own, it’s a lot. When you add hours and hours of editing to the process? Oof.

*passes out*

It’s why I’m such a huge fan of outsourcing in general, especially with my editing. Enter: Vital Edit, my favorite editing service and one that I continually recommend to other photographers.

Wait… why do you love outsourcing so much?

Look, I’m not ashamed to say that I cannot do it all in my business — and I don’t want to do it all in my business! Over the years I’ve learned to implement strategies, systems, and a team within Almond Leaf Studios that take care of what needs to be taken care of so that I can do the work that truly lights me up, and that’s the goal I want every photographer I know and love to reach. It’s where outsourcing comes in — trusting that, if you bring on and hire the right people, you can level up your support and, in turn, level up your business as a whole.

At Almond Leaf Studios, we outsource quite a few things. From podcast editing to online business management to general support, I need the help — and love it! Editing is no different for us, either. I have a style I’m drawn to as a photographer, and at this point I’m excited and happy to outsource that part of my job to the photo editor on my team and to the team at Vital Edit, too.

So, before we go any further, let me remind you really quick: you’re not weak for asking for help. Heck, I think it makes you even stronger.

How Vital Edit Works

Vital Edit is a custom photo editing service for photographers that takes editing off of your hands, and I’m a huge fan of it. (Also, note — this isn’t sponsored in any way. I just love it that much!) While I have a photo editor now and don’t use Vital Edit as much as I used to, it’s still an important piece of my business — and was huge as I learned to lighten my own load, too. With Vital Edit, you work with a team who learns your style and edits your photos accordingly. You can also upload your own presets and give the Vital Edit team custom examples, too — which is super helpful for getting the style right. Just like with anything you outsource, you’ll want to go in with patience and great communication — they’re real humans, and so it sometimes takes a little bit of time to get it perfect… but that’s okay.

You’ll log into the Member Area and upload your photos, and from there you can choose a huge amount of parameters and guidelines for the editors to follow. For example, sometimes I like to add on cropping and straightening to my edits, and sometimes I like for them to turn the raw images into JPEGs. Usually I always ask for photo selection and editing (you can learn more in my free training here), and I’ll occasionally add on other things, depending on what I need. It’s all about what’s aligned to you and what you and your business need — which is one of the reasons I love it. If you’re super bogged down you can literally hand the reins over to their team, and it’s so nice.

Why should I try Vital Edit?

Here’s the thing: as a business owner and as a photographer, you deserve to take a breath. If Vital Edit is something that will allow you to take a breath, it’s worth a try. It’s all in asking yourself — how much time can this save me? How much is my time worth to me? I am a huge fan of using $100 an hour as a starting benchmark for outsourcing. To outsource effectively, your time needs to be worth at least $100 a hour — so, if it’s going to cost you $300 to edit a wedding with Vital Edit, just think about what you do with your own time. You could build out new lead magnets, you could simplify your process, you could source out testimonials… the possibilities are endless.

Here’s the thing: your time is worth more than you give yourself credit for.

Start giving yourself credit for it.
